FREMANTLE youngster Viv Michie has suffered a season-ending knee injury playing for Peel Thunder in the WAFL on Saturday.

Michie fell awkwardly during the second term against Swan Districts and tore the meniscus in his right knee.

The 21-year-old is set to have surgery in Melbourne this week and will miss the remainder of the season.

It is another frustrating setback for Michie, who made his AFL debut against Geelong in round 14, gathering 13 disposals as the substitute. It was his only senior appearance this season.

The strongly-built midfielder was recruited in with pick No.44 in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft but spent two years battling stress fractures in his foot.

Michie was averaging 26 disposals per game at WAFL level this season but could not crack a regular berth in Fremantle's powerful midfield unit.

The Victorian is out of contract at the end of 2013.

General manager of football operations Chris Bond said, “We will be in better position to assess the situation after Viv has had surgery but at this stage we expect him to be available for the start of pre-season training."
