On Friday night, when Geelong takes on Port Adelaide in a semi-final at the MCG, the classy midfielder will add a milestone to his list of achievements by notching his 50th game.
"The last two years I've played most games, so it's come around pretty quickly in the end," the 22-year-old told AFL.com.au.
"I never thought I'd play 50 games at a club like this. I'm very happy with how it's all worked out so far."
Born and raised in Darwin, Motlop took some time to find his feet at Geelong after being drafted in 2008.
However, he quickly won over his teammates with his enthusiasm and diverse talents.
"'Mots' is a great guy," Cats skipper Joel Selwood said. "He could have a career in singing if he wanted it.
"Obviously it's a tough thing to move a kid down from Darwin and bring him down here, but we can't fault him in what he's done."
Nevertheless, things didn't go to plan on the field in his early years at the Cattery.
Indeed, it's only a couple of years ago that Motlop was struggling to get out on the park at all.
He made his debut in 2010, but a series of shoulder injuries meant he had just five games to his name by the end of the 2011 season.
"Injuries took a toll, so that was my main problem early on," Motlop said.
"I always believed that I could play good footy. I just had to get my body right.
"The last couple of years have been good."
Motlop finally started to realise his immense potential last year. He enjoyed a breakout 2012 campaign, playing 22 matches and kicking 26 goals.
This season he has been even better, averaging 18 possessions and almost two goals across his 22 appearances.
"He's been an exceptional player this year; really important for us," Geelong coach Chris Scott said.
"But we think that while he's played at a very high level this year, he's got some significant improvement left in him.
"We think that not only will he be a really good player on the field, we see him as one of our emerging leaders off the field as well."
Motlop was to come out of contract at the end of the season, but he has agreed to a new two-year deal with the Cats.
He has not officially signed off on the contract that will keep him at Simonds Stadium until the end of the 2015 season. But he, his management and Geelong's hierarchy are committed to getting the paperwork done in the next week.
"I'm about to sign again with the club, and I'm really happy at the club," Motlop said.
"I'm signing for two years. It will happen this week or next week.
"I've wanted to get it out of the way because I don't want to be thinking about it.
"Although I haven't really been thinking about it much, anyway, because I was always going to sign with the Cats.
"I'm very happy here. I'm probably the happiest I've ever been in my life.
"I definitely feel at home."
The one thing Motlop will never warm to is Victoria's changeable weather, especially the cold days and nights in winter.
"I still hate it," he said. "I'll be honest. But that's probably the only bad thing about Geelong.
"Everything else it great. I love the people, I love the town, but the weather is a bit annoying sometimes."
