CYRIL Rioli appears to be over his ankle complaint and looks certain to take his place in Hawthorn's preliminary final team against Geelong.

Rioli, who has not played since round 22, took full part in Hawthorn's main training session at Waverley Park on Tuesday and looked untroubled for much of the hour-long training stint.

The Hawks star practised hitting contests at pace, zigzagged around the oval and kicked with precision and penetration.

The first half of the session focused mainly on goal kicking, with Rioli working on left foot and right foot snaps.

He also went through his set-shot routine with teammates.

Aside from that, he was seen deep in conversation with Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson and fitness coach Andrew Russell.

But he returned to join in lane work with teammates, where he was put to the test when having to leap for a ball above his head. Rioli seemed to pull it off with ease.

Hawthorn spearhead Lance Franklin also trained solidly, mainly practising his set-shot routine.

Shane Savage trained with the VFL group, just days after starring with five goals in the Box Hill Hawks' preliminary final.

Hawks midfielder Jonathan Simpkin also joined Savage in the VFL group, while Liam Shiels and Matt Spangher trained with the AFL side.

If Rioli is declared fit, the Hawks will have to find two places – for him and Franklin - in the side that smashed the Sydney Swans by 54 points in their qualifying final battle a fortnight ago.
