CARLTON is set to enter discussions with West Coast that could send contracted defender Josh Bootsma to the Eagles if a suitable deal can be struck.

The Blues met with Bootsma's management on Monday morning to discuss his future and confirmed they were open to trading the 20-year-old.

Given Bootsma has two years to run on his existing contract after re-signing with Carlton in August, a suitable deal would need to be arranged or Bootsma will remain with the Blues.

Bootsma's manager, Jason Dover of Stride Sports Management, told AFL.com.au that West Coast was the only club Bootsma would be traded to.

"If that can't be done, he is a required player at Carlton," Dover said.

It is understood Carlton and West Coast will now begin discussions on Bootsma, who was the Blues' first selection in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft at pick No.22 overall.

West Coast has been proactive in its pursuit of Brisbane Lions midfielder Elliot Yeo and it is expected he would be the Eagles' first priority.

Courageous and a good reader of the play, Bootsma played five games in his debut season last year and played nine games in 2013.

He is the son of former Fremantle player Brad Bootsma and was recruited from South Fremantle's WAFL colts team.
