COLLINGWOOD midfielder Luke Ball insists the Magpies' squad remained united last season despite the claims by former teammate Darren Jolly that several players had issues with the coach.

After Jolly was delisted by Collingwood and overlooked the rookie draft , the two-time premiership ruckman said that he had an issue with Nathan Buckley, and vice-versa.

"[And there are] a lot of players that are in the same boat", Jolly said.

But seasoned veteran Ball said the Pies' problems were the sort thatnaturally occurred when a team encountered some hiccups, as theCollingwood players did when their form collectively dipped this season.

"Looking back now, I think when you're playing well and winning, everyone is in a good mood and everyone is happy," Ball said ahead of the AFLPA's 40th anniversary dinner at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

"When you're not playing so well and certain players might not be playing so well, injuries and all those sorts of things, that's when rumblings start to occur.

"I don't think what happened at our club last year was any different to 17 other clubs."

There has been speculation Nick Maxwell will not captain Collingwood in 2014 after five years at the helm, with vice-captain Scott Pendlebury the hot favourite to succeed him.

Ball, who skippered St Kilda in 2006-07 but isn't interested in the main role again, said Maxwell was training well and the captaincy issue would be dealt with in the new year - perhaps in February or March.

All clubs are now back training after adhering to new annual leave guidelines set out by the AFLPA in August this year.

They were tightened to allow the players a more comprehensive mental and physical break from football.

Players did not return to their clubs until November 6 (players with up to four years' experience) and November 18 (five years or more) if they missed the finals or were eliminated in week one.

Players whose clubs progressed beyond that point had their breaks extended to November 18 and December 2, respectively.

Ball said the Magpies had returned refreshed and rejuvenated ahead of the 2014 season.

"I think all the players really enjoyed the new guidelines and I can only speak for my club, but the players have come back - possibly to do with the way we finished last season – in really good spirits," he said.

"There's been a lot of changes at our club but the great things that we can see, the people who are in charge of the club are fully supportive of them and want to really work with them and maximise the time we are at the club.

"I can only speak for the Collingwood footy club but I think it's had a really positive impact."
