MELBOURNE radio station SEN 1116 has issued an on-air apology on Friday to St Kilda's head of football Chris Pelchen following comments made by Dermott Brereton on November 1.

Brereton, a five-time premiership player with Hawthorn, made personal comments in regards to Pelchen following the sacking of close friend Scott Watters as senior coach.

On SEN's The Run Home host Mark Allen issued an apology to Pelchen and the St Kilda Football Club for the interview that took place with Brereton on the show.

"During the course of that interview, Dermott made a number of comments about Chris Pelchen, the Club's Head of Football, that we have no reason to believe were accurate or with genuine basis," Allen said.

"SEN seeks to be impartial whilst welcoming free speech and the ability for callers to express strong opinions. We do not set out to make personal attacks and we welcome individuals to exercise a right of reply.

"We strive for honest, fairness, independence and respect.

"On reflection of Dermott's comments about Chris Pelchen, we accept that in this instance, we have not lived up to those principles and SEN, David (Schwarz, Allen's co-host) and I wish to acknowledge that on our program today."

The statement went on to outline the specific corrections SEN wished to issue in regards to the comments made by Brereton in regards to Pelchen and the St Kilda football club.

"After due investigation we would like to correct the following, we have no reason to believe that Chris Pelchen was responsible for sacking Scott Watters and that it was a decision of the board of the St Kilda Football Club," Allen said.

"We have no reason to believe that Chris Pelchen was involved in a strategy to undermine or discredit Scott Watters as coach of the club, nor do we believe that he was responsible for leaking confidential information.

"Therefore, SEN, David and I acknowledge that Chris Pelchen's credibility and reputation after working in the AFL industry for 30 years should not have been unfairly questioned on our program, and on behalf of SEN, we apologise unreservedly to him and St Kilda Football Club for any hurt, embarrassment or damage that interview may have caused Chris with respect to either his personal or professional reputation."

Afl.com.au understands that Pelchen and St Kilda have accepted the apology from SEN.
