The Hawks will go into round one without five of their premiership team, with Lance Franklin (Sydney Swans), Brent Guerra and Max Bailey (both retired) having left the club, and Brian Lake (three weeks) and Cyril Rioli (one week) suspended. Replacing Lake won't be easy, especially with Ryan Schoenmakers (anterior cruciate ligament) and Matt Spangher in doubt to play, but Angus Litherland appears ready to make his debut in a re-jigged defence. The loss of Jesse Hogan because of a back injury is disappointing but it is silly to think he was critical to the Demons winning in round one. After all, he has not played an AFL game yet. The absence of Mitch Clark and Chris Dawes makes Jack Fitzpatrick and Jeremy Howe the key talls up forward. Both are in good form and will test the Saints' defence. Max Gawn, Dean Kent and Mark Jamar will not be match fit and Alex Georgiou deserves his chance although Mitch Clisby and James Strauss will be considered. Jay Kennedy-Harris should get his chance although Sam Blease and Rohan Bail could easily win a spot as a small forward. Luke Tapscott had an interrupted pre-season and Christian Salem won't be ready although he is certainly talented. - Peter Ryan

The biggest question facing North Melbourne's selectors ahead of round one will be the structure of their forward line. With Robbie Tarrant (tibia) unavailable, Majak Daw and ruckman Daniel Currie appear to be vying for the third tall spot alongside Drew Petrie and Aaron Black. Although Currie's pre-season form has been stronger, Daw's superior athleticism should give him the nod. Leigh Adams' likely unavailability also opens up a spot for a small forward, with former Tiger Robin Nahas a good chance to debut for the Roos. Of course, North will be without skipper Andrew Swallow (Achilles tendon), but star recruit Nick Dal Santo will help cover his absence in the midfield. - Nick Bowen

The Power are building a seriously intimidating midfield unit with the likes of Boak, Hartlett, Ebert and Lobbe joined by Wingard, Wines, Monfries, Gray, Polec and even White. They'll get good drive out of defence through Pittard and O'Shea and the last line of Jonas, Carlile and Impey can handle talls or smalls. Polec and White have settled wonderfully since arriving at Alberton last October and offer outside speed, with Polec in particular showing signs he's set to enjoy a career-best season. Jay Schulz will again be the prime attacking target, but the Power have countless avenues to goal with Stewart, Monfries, Gray and the entire midfield all capable of kicking multiple majors. - Harry Thring

Dylan Grimes is the club's best option as a third tall defender, while Dustin Martin is named at half-back, where he was used effectively through the NAB Challenge. Forward Jake King and defender Ricky Petterd face a battle breaking into a strong line-up. Luke Dunstan has been the pick of the draftees this pre-season and will press for selection while Jack Billings isn't out of the running either with both playing all three games. Picking the Eagles' round one side is a difficult task as even Adam Simpson is unsure about his best 22, just two weeks out. There are concerns over Nic Naitanui's fitness. He got through the last practice match playing 50 minutes but they will want the insurance of either Callum Sinclair or Scott Lycett if something goes wrong. Sinclair gets the nod simply on impressive form in the NAB Challenge but Lycett could easily play, as he was the incumbent late last year. There are a number who are potential starters but have missed here. Josh Hill, Brad Sheppard, Jamie Bennell and Dom Sheed would all be stiff to miss round one given they've played well in the pre-season. They still could be named depending on how the new coach wants to set up. If Naitanui doesn't need insurance, or indeed isn't risked for round one, Sheed could play as the extra midfielder. If the Eagles needed a smaller defence against the Western Bulldogs then Sheppard or Bennell could play. Josh Hill has been squeezed out due to the form and flexibility that Jamie Cripps provides. - Alex Malcolm

Liam Picken or Daniel Pearce look likely cover for Murphy across half-back while the Dogs may go small up forward with doubts on Williams and Liam Jones seemingly out of favour so far in 2014.
