MELBOURNE has not ruled out exciting young forward Jesse Hogan for round one but says it will take no risks with him.

The 19-year-old was set to make his debut in the season opener against Melbourne before suffering a stress reaction in his back.

However the club's elite performance manager Dave Misson told melbournefc.com.au that he was very pleased with Hogan's progress.

"Jesse’s back has settled really well and we’re hoping he is able to run towards the end of this week and he’ll potentially train next week," Misson said.

"We’re not writing him off for round one either. But he’s a young kid and we’re not going to risk him with the injury that he’s got, but he has settled very quickly and the doctor is very happy with him."

The Demons look likely to be without Chris Dawes, who has experienced calf tightness, while Mitch Clark has been ruled out.

Dawes and Clark are yet to play a game together.

Experienced ruckman Mark Jamar will also miss the opening round but should be right for round two. He played just nine games last season because of a foot injury and a calf injury has interrupted his pre-season.

Young ruckman Max Gawn and utility Luke Tapscott will play for Casey in a practice match on Saturday to press their claims for inclusion in the round one team.

Melbourne has not won in either round one or round two since 2005 but is rated a strong chance of beating St Kilda in the opening game. The Saints will be without talented midfielders Jack Steven, Leigh Montagna and Lenny Hayes due to injury and suspension.

Defender Colin Garland is back running after an ankle operation and the club hopes he will be able to participate in skills sessions next week. It is unlikely he would be match fit for round one.

James Frawley and Dean Terlich will not play this week after copping heavy knocks in the final practice match but both are certain to be ready for round one.
