FORMER Melbourne captain Jack Trengove has responded in encouraging style to his omission, playing a central role in the Casey Scorpions' six-point win over Essendon's VFL team at Windy Hill on Sunday.

Trengove spent a large portion of the second half winning the ball around the clinches, as he finished with 25 disposals and a goal.

"I thought late in the game when the game was there to be won, he was really good. He got his hands on the footy and he and Neville Jetta gave us a lift through the midfield," Scorpions coach Rohan Welsh said.

"We looked to free him up across half-back so that he could just play the game, because that's what he's good but it was pleasing for him to get a lot of the footy in the last quarter."

Trengove was dropped from the Demons' side that fell to West Coast by 93 points in round two, with Paul Roos and his coaching staff deciding to give the leadership group member a chance to find some form.

The 22-year-old's footy smarts stood out on Sunday and his direction and leadership provided a strong example for his young Scorpions teammates.

"He's fantastic as a leader. We're a pretty young team and his direction out on the ground was sensational," Welsh said.

Playing his first game of the year, Mark Jamar put in a solid effort as he rotated between the ruck and a role deep forward.

Jamar was on limited game time – he played around 70 minutes – and finished with 11 disposals and a bunch of effective hit-outs.

The big ruckman still needs around two to three weeks of consistent VFL football before being considered for senior selection, according to Welsh.

Aidan Riley, who was removed from Melbourne's long-term injury list during the week, also got through about 70 minutes of game time and picked up 20 possessions as he works his way back from a broken leg.

Jordie McKenzie (31 touches) Mitch Clisby (28), Neville Jetta (23) Jimmy Toumpas (22) were the other notable Melbourne-listed players to impact the game.

For Essendon, Shaun Edwards, recruited from Greater Western Sydney in the off-season, was lively, as was Leroy Jetta whose sideways movement was impressive.

Demons livewire Sam Blease kicked the winning goal in the dying seconds of the game, after a fabulous setup from Neville Jetta, as the Scorpions won 12.14 (86) to the Bombers' 11.14 (80).
