ESSENDON is sweating on the fitness of star midfielder Brendon Goddard after he was one of a number of high-profile players who reported for scans on Monday.

On Sunday, Goddard was substituted out of the Bombers' 53-point loss to Fremantle at Patersons Stadium during the second quarter, after complaining of tightness in his groin in the warm up.

The Bombers remain hopeful he will be fit to play in the club's clash with St Kilda on Saturday night.

"We don't know if there is any injury, at the moment, so I'll see (after I get scans) and let you know in a couple of days," Goddard said on Monday afternoon.

When asked of the specific nature of his groin injury, Goddard responded that it was "tight enough" to have it checked out.

After the big loss to the Dockers, Essendon coach Mark Thompson said Goddard was a chance to line up against the Saints.

"He (Goddard) was tight in the warm-up," Thompson said.

"He came off during the warm-up to stretch his groin [and] it didn't release. He tried to play and we tried to release it.

"In the end we weren't getting anywhere so we just subbed him.

"He's a good chance to play next week, which sounds ridiculous I know, but sometimes that happens."

Hawthorn also has some sort of concern ahead of its blockbuster clash with Geelong on Monday, with star midfielder Sam Mitchell also having scans.

Mitchell would not reveal the nature of his complaint but the 31-year-old did miss the round two game against Essendon with calf tightness.

Richmond midfielder Dan Jackson also made an appearance at the scanning clinic on Monday, but is confident he will suit up against the Brisbane Lions on Thursday night.

"The hammy actually feels pretty good. I'm just dealing with hips and things, just a lack of conditioning, so I should be fine in a few weeks," Jackson said.

Former Melbourne captain Jack Trengove, who has played in the VFL the past two weeks, also had a check-up.
