A NORTH Melbourne player has been questioned by police over an alleged sexual assault in 2007.

AFL.com.au has chosen not to name the player at this time based on legal advice.

The Kangaroos issued a brief statement on Monday evening.

"The North Melbourne Football Club will make no comment regarding the allegations aired on Channel 7 News tonight," the statement said.

"No charges have been laid and the club has no indication any charges will be laid.

"We request the privacy of all parties be respected."

Details of the arrest only became public on Monday night but the player was actually questioned back in May.

Victoria Police said in a statement they had interviewed a man on 25 May, 2014 in relation to a "historical sexual assault."

"He has been released pending further enquiries," the statement said.

"As the investigation is ongoing, no further information will be provided at this time."
