THE AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed Round 17. The following charges were laid:

 

Greg Broughton, Gold Coast Suns, has been charged with a First Offence for Wrestling ($1200 sanction) for wrestling Nathan Hrovat, Western Bulldogs, during the second quarter of the Round 17 match between the Gold Coast Suns and the Western Bulldogs, played at Cazaly's Stadium on Saturday July 12, 2014.

 

In summary, he can accept an $900 sanction with an early plea.

 

A first offence for wrestling is a $1200 sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to an $900 sanction.

 

Nathan Hrovat, Western Bulldogs, has been charged with a First Offence for Wrestling ($1200 sanction) for wrestling Greg Broughton, Gold Coast Suns, during the second quarter of the Round 17 match between the Western Bulldogs and the Gold Coast Suns, played at Cazaly's Stadium on Saturday July 12, 2014.

Tom Murphy, Gold Coast Suns, has been charged with a Level Two Misconduct (Kneeing) Offence (225 points, two-match sanction) for kneeing Jake Stringer, Western Bulldogs, during the fourth quarter of the Round 17 match between the Gold Coasts Suns and the Western Bulldogs, played at Cazaly's Stadium on Saturday July 12, 2014.

 

In summary, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Western Bulldogs Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two Offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing five-year good record, which reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 126.56 points and a one-match sanction.

 

Trent Cotchin, Richmond, has been charged with a First Offence for Making Negligent Contact with an Umpire ($1200 sanction) for making negligent contact with umpire Luke Farmer during the first quarter of the Round 17 match between Richmond and Port Adelaide, played at Etihad Stadium on Sunday July 13, 2014.

 

In summary, he can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea.

Kane Cornes, Port Adelaide, has been charged with a Level Two Striking Offence (125 points, one-match sanction) for striking Dan Jackson, Richmond, during the first quarter of the Round 17 match between Port Adelaide and Richmond, played at Etihad Stadium on Sunday July 13, 2014.

 

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Richmond Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.

 

Hayden Ballantyne, Fremantle, has been charged with a Level Two Striking Offence (125 points, one-match sanction) for striking Tomas Bugg, GWS Giants, during the third quarter of the Round 17 match between Fremantle and the GWS Giants, played at Patersons Stadium on Sunday July 13, 2014.

 

In summary, due to his previous poor record, his one-match sanction must remain at one game, even with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the GWS Giants Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of 87.50 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 212.50 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 159.38 points and a one-match sanction.

  

The match day report laid against St Kilda’s Sam Dunell for striking North Melbourne’s Sam Wright was assessed. After speaking to the umpire that laid the match-day report, receiving a medical report from the North Melbourne Football Club and reviewing all available footage, it was determined the force used in the contact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between Melbourne’s Tom McDonald and the Geelong Cats’ Brad Hartman from the fourth quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. McDonald was going on his line down the ground after Geelong Cats’ forward Tom Hawkins had taken a mark. Hartman runs in front of his team mate Hawkins and contact is made with the Melbourne player as they are proceeding down the ground. There was no high contact made and it was the view of the panel the contact was not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between St Kilda’s Tom Hickey and North Melbourne’s Lachlan Hansen from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Hickey and Hansen were both approaching the ball from opposite directions when contact was made. It was the view of the panel that Hickey was contesting the ball and had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between West Coast’s Jacob Brennan and the Brisbane Lions’ Lewis Taylor from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Brisbane’s Dayne Zorko handballs to his teammate Taylor, who slows in an attempt to take possession of the ball. Brennan is running towards his opponent and braces for contact when Taylor is not able to take possession of the ball from his team mate. Brennan’s action was not a bumping action as he braced for contact in the view of the panel. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between Carlton’s Lachie Henderson and the Sydney Swans’ Ben McGlynn from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel that Henderson’s action was not a striking action and the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
