Essendon forward Patrick Ambrose has had surgery on his broken jaw and will be sidelined for the next 1-2 weeks.

The 22-year-old fractured his jaw during Friday night's loss to the Sydney Swans at the SCG and had an operation on Sunday morning to repair the damage.

Essendon doctor Bruce Reid said the surgery was successful.

"Paddy had scans yesterday and they revealed he had an undisplaced fracture in his jaw," Reid said.

"He underwent surgery this morning, it was a straight forward procedure and I would expect Paddy to miss between 1-2 weeks."

The Bombers face an in-form Richmond side at the MCG on Friday night.
