COLLINGWOOD premiership player Tyson Goldsack is set to turn his back on free agency and sign a new deal with the Magpies after speaking with coach Nathan Buckley on Tuesday.

Goldsack had been linked to Port Adelaide on a three-year deal, with the Magpies reportedly unable to match the terms being offered to the unrestricted free agent.

However, after months of stalled negotiations, the versatile 27-year-old indicated a new deal at the Westpac Centre was imminent.

"I'm very keen to stay [at the Pies] and I've mentioned that to 'Bucks'," Goldsack told 3AW on Tuesday night.

"We're not far off it actually. We had a discussion today on the phone and we're a lot closer today than we were yesterday.

"We're very close and hopefully it's tied up in the next couple of days."

Goldsack, who has played 124 games for the Magpies, has maintained he wanted to remain at Collingwood and Buckley suggested a deal would be reached at last week's fan forum.

Recently retired Magpie Luke Ball said Goldsack's signature would be valuable for the club.

"That would be great if he signed," Ball told AFL.com.au.

"He's a terrific club man, a popular bloke and with a few older guys moving on recently, it would be great to have that sort of experience around the place.

"Hopefully that's the case [that he signs soon]."
