BRENT Harvey faces a nervous wait this weekend to see if he is penalised for his clash with Geelong captain Joel Selwood in the second quarter of Friday night's semi final.

Harvey connected with Selwood high and left the skipper with a gash above his eye that required redressing throughout the game.

If the Match Review Panel acts, Harvey's sanction will be increased by the 41 demerit points he still carries from his round 21 three-game ban for misconduct, plus a poor prior record loading.

The panel's decision will certainly dictate whether Harvey plays in Friday night's preliminary final against the Sydney Swans.

After the game, the Kangaroo midfielder told Channel 7 he thought the two players had just collided heads.

But Selwood was animated when he spoke to the emergency umpire about the clash when he came to the bench.

The champion Cat was asked post-match about whether he had needed stitches and what had happened to cause the cut.

"I've got no idea and I won't speak about it," Selwood said.

All Harvey would say post-match was that the pair had a clash of heads.

We've compared the incident to others this season that have attracted attention:

BRENT HARVEY v JOEL SELWOOD, semi final, MCG - ?
Selwood is running for the ball alongside Andrew Swallow when Harvey charges in and makes front-on contact. Harvey's feet are off the ground, the incident is away from the ball, and it opens a nasty wound above Selwood's eye.

NAT FYFE v MICHAEL RISCHITELLI, round two, Patersons Stadium - GUILTY
The bump that got everyone talking and saw Fyfe rubbed out for two games, as well as contention for the Brownlow Medal. Fyfe clashed heads with Rischitelli when the Docker elected to bump rather than tackle, which left him responsible.

ADAM GOODES v JOEL SELWOOD, round 11, SCG - NOT GUILTY
Goodes was cleared after making contact with Selwood's head with his upper arm after the Match Review Panel deemed the force was below that required for a report and the Swans veteran had his eye on the ball.

LANCE FRANKLIN v CLAY CAMERON, round 12, Metricon Stadium – NOT GUILTY
Franklin's late contact with Cameron looked ugly as the young Sun hit the ground hard, but Buddy was cleared after the Match Review Panel ruled there was insufficient force used.

DANIEL WELLS v SHAUN HIGGINS, round 21, Etihad Stadium - GUILTY
Wells ended up with a one-week ban as the result of two incidents against Bulldog midfielder Shaun Higgins, the second of which was rough conduct charge. Higgins was bent over and about to handball when Wells crashed into him with his right shoulder.

JARRYD ROUGHEAD v BEN McGLYNN, round eight, ANZ Stadium - GUILTY
Roughead's head-high bump on McGlynn saw the Swans' forward crumpled on the turf before leaving the ground in the hands of trainers. He played out the game without any problems but Roughead was suspended for a week.

MARK LeCRAS v WILL HOSKIN-ELLIOTT, round eight, Patersons Stadium – GUILTY
The Eagles forward was handed a one-match ban for his left elbow striking the head of Hoskin-Elliott. The impact was low and Hoskin-Elliott played out the game, but it was LeCras' good record and guilty plea that saw his two-match suspension halved.

PAUL DUFFIELD v CHAD WINGARD, round eight, Adelaide Oval – GUILTY
Duffield accepted a reprimand and 70.31 points for the incident against Wingard, which was assessed negligent and high contact but low impact. His good record and early plea reduced his sentence from one game to a reprimand.

CLINTON YOUNG v PAUL CHAPMAN, round six, MCG – GUILTY
Young was well off the ground when he connected with Chapman on Anzac Day as the Bomber forward tried to mark the ball mid-air. He accepted a reprimand and 93.75 points with a guilty plea after it was classified as reckless, low impact and high contact.
