SPEEDY forward Jeff Garlett has requested a trade to Melbourne after 107 games and 183 goals with Carlton.

The Blues made it clear they wanted to trade the 25-year-old at the end of the season after he failed to tell the club he was involved in an altercation outside a Melbourne nightclub.

Speaking on NAB AFL Trade Radio on Tuesday, Garlett’s manager Liam Pickering said he was confident a deal would be achieved.

"It’ll get done," he said.

Pickering said he had spoken with Carlton head of football operations Andrew McKay and Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney.

"We’ve agreed on terms of a contract, they (the clubs) just need to organise a trade," he said.

Pickering said Essendon had also expressed an interest in securing the out-of-favour Carlton forward.

"Essendon were in it as well, so there were two clubs that were pretty keen on Jeff," he said.

"'Roosy' (Melbourne coach Paul Roos) had been really adamant that he wants Jeff - (he) sees a role not just in the forward pocket (but) maybe more up the ground around the midfield with his speed.

"A fresh start for Jeff is going to be really important."

Garlett kicked just 12 goals in nine games in 2014, but he has twice managed more than 40 goals in a season.

He kicked at least 29 goals in each of the four years before this season.

Melbourne has not had a leading goalkicker boot more than 29 goals in a season since Liam Jurrah kicked 40 in 2011.

The Demons decided to pursue the forward after meeting with him in recent weeks.

He has also met with senior Melbourne players.
