MELBOURNE chief executive Peter Jackson has announced his immediate resignation from his role as AFL Victoria chairman.

Jackson's energies have been increasingly dedicated to the Demons and he recently extended his contract with the club until the end of next season.

Although he was at AFL Victoria in an advisory role, Jackson felt he could no longer continue in his adjoining capacities.

The Demons' CEO named the fact that participation in football at grassroots level is at its highest ever level as his greatest accomplishment.

Jackson ensured the strength of the Victorian Football League (VFL) remained, while he also concentrated his efforts in fostering the talent of players and coaches at TAC Cup level.

An announcement in regard to Jackson's replacement at AFL Victoria is expected ahead of the 2015 season.
