STAR Port Adelaide defender Jackson Trengove will undergo surgery on Thursday after injuring his shoulder at training.

The 24-year-old suffered the injury during a marking contest on Tuesday.

Despite the setback the Power hope Trengove will be able to return to non-contact training within 10 days and fully expect him to be available for the club's round one clash against Fremantle.

"We expect Jackson should be able to maintain his fitness, to a large degree, as he'll be able to do most of the team running over the pre-season," high performance manager Darren Burgess told the club's website.

"He does have very good recuperative powers and he does everything right in terms of his rehab so we're hopeful of a speedy recovery."

Although Trengove's a solid chance to line up in round one, he'll almost certainly miss the Power's first public internal trial match on February 27, as well as their NAB Challenge games against West Coast (March 8), Richmond (March 14) and Adelaide (March 21).
