Coaches, the 2015 AFL National Coaching Conference provides an ideal opportunity to develop your coaching skills, increase your understanding of the modern game, discuss football and coaching with some of the best coaches and topic experts in the country and mix and talk footy with many other coaches from all levels of the game.

A world class array of keynote speakers will lead the conference including:

  • Alastair Clarkson - Hawthorn Senior Coach
  • Leigh Russell - Inspired Heads Director and Sports Psychologist on the high rating TV series The Recruit, presenting on the key skills of Emotional Intelligence in Coaching
  • Louise Burke OAM – Head of Discipline, Sports Nutrition at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) on the role of Supplements in Performance.
  • Mark Yettica-Paulson - The Yettica Group, will be sharing his experience in Indigenous Cultural Awareness.
  • Brendon Bolton – Hawthorn Assistant Coach

Game-based coaching for developing players is a hot issue in coaching at all levels. There is a focus on this in the conference with specific attention on the key coaching skills and methods which are required to do this effectively. Shane Pill from Flinders University and West Adelaide, along with Matt Jones from Dandenong Stingrays, will conduct and on-field game sense coaching session on Saturday and Shane will offer a follow up workshop for coaches interested in refining their methods in this area. 

You can hear from former AFL senior coaches Stan Alves (Effective Training), David Parkin (Coaching Philosophy), Peter Schwab (Game Plan), and Terry Wallace (List Management).  Two of the most experienced and long term AFL Assistant Coaches David Wheadon (Goal Kicking) and George Stone (Role of the Assistant Coach) are also sharing their hard won expertise.

A number of recently retired players in Nick Maxwell (On-field Leadership), Lindsay Gilbee (Kicking), Tim Clarke (Game Day Coaching) are presenting, along with other AFL assistant and development coaches Darren Crocker, Luke Curran, Matt Francis, Adam Kingsley and Adam Skrobalak. 

There is a great choice of topics for all coaches whatever your current knowledge, level of coaching or areas of specific interest. Thirty-five specific presentations, workshops and discussion sessions are offered in five break-out streams across the two days. These include topics based around people management, personal management, communication, injury prevention & management, effective training, specific skill development (contact & tackling, kicking, ruckwork, goal kicking), match day coaching, coaching specific groups (rucks, female players, talented young players, multicultural players), building and coaching a club and high performance coaching.

Overall the conference is also a great setting to develop the skills and awareness to build on the integrity of your coaching, assisting you to do the right things, at the right time, for the right reasons in your approach to coaching. This will benefit your players, your club and increase your satisfaction with your coaching role.
