A FIRE broke out at Domain Stadium ahead of the round one clash between Fremantle and Port Adelaide on Sunday afternoon.

The blaze occurred around 1pm Perth time, just under four hours before the opening bounce, and fire and emergency services were immediately on hand to extinguish the blaze as smoke billowed on the Roberts Road side of the ground.

Domain Stadium general manager Gavin Taylor confirmed to AFL.com.au that no one was injured and that the damage would not affect any patrons attending the game. Taylor said stadium staff were investigating how the fire started.

"We're not sure of the exact cause at this stage," Taylor said. "Fire services have done their preliminary investigation and we're expecting a report, most probably, first thing tomorrow.

"They'll be back out on site tomorrow to do a more detailed investigation."

Sunday's was the second fire to occur at a stadium on the opening weekend after a blaze also broke out at the Gabba on Saturday night.

A fire alarm at Adelaide Oval on Sunday also delayed fans as they tried to enter the stadium for the Crows-Kangaroos match.
