ESSENDON has upgraded tall forward Shaun McKernan to its senior list ahead of Sunday's blockbuster against Hawthorn at the MCG.

He replaces veteran speedster Jason Winderlich who has been placed on the long-term injury list because of an ongoing back problem.

McKernan was drafted by the Bombers after Adelaide delisted him at the end of last season.

He had played 34 games in six seasons at the Crows after being the No.28 selection at the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

Essendon will have to replace the injured David Myers and may opt for McKernan to lend support to Tom Bellchambers in the ruck and Joe Daniher inside forward 50.

Hawthorn has a star-studded backline capable of managing most set-ups but Daniher will need support to stop him being double-teamed throughout the game.

Essendon has not beaten Hawthorn since round six, 2010.
