HIGHLY rated Port Adelaide assistant Matthew Nicks is the latest candidate to rule himself out of the vacant senior position at Carlton.

Nicks' coaching star has risen considerably in recent seasons.

He is in charge of the Power's back line and earlier this year he was one of nine assistants from around the League accepted into the AFL's inaugural level four senior coach program.

The former Sydney Swan has been at the Power since 2011 and coached the team against West Coast in this season's NAB Challenge.

Nicks' decision not to pursue the Carlton job follows that of fellow Power assistant Michael Voss, who declared he wanted to be part of Port's short- and long-term future.

South Australian native Nicks told Triple M radio in Adelaide that he, like Voss, still had much to learn at Alberton.

"I'm not expecting a call at all – I haven't heard anything – I haven't made any contact with them either, at this point it's not on my radar," Nicks said.

"It's not something I feel I'm in a position to go for … I've got a lot more work to do with the Power.

"At this point, no, it won't be something I'll be looking at."

Former Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson all but ruled himself out of contention, too, insisting he was content coaching the NAB AFL Academy.

John Barker is Carlton's interim coach for the rest of the season following last week's sacking of Mick Malthouse.
