ESSENDON has been dealt a double blow on the eve of the club's must-win clash with Melbourne at the MCG, with Heath Hocking and Jake Melksham withdrawn from the team.

Hocking's withdrawal comes less than 24 hours after the midfielder was named for his first game for the season following groin surgery.

The Bombers say Hocking is suffering from a lower back problem while Melksham hurt his hamstring at training.

They have been replaced in the 22 by Jason Ashby and Shaun Edwards.

The loss of Hocking is a considerable blow after the news captain Jobe Watson will miss the rest of the season after a shoulder reconstruction this week.

Kyle Langford and Jonathan Giles have been added to the emergency list.
