AFL General Manager Football Operations Mark Evans today said the GWS Giants Football Club had received a suspended sanction of $2500 after coach Leon Cameron made two approaches to the emergency umpire on the interchange bench during the course quarter of last week’s Round 18 match against Fremantle at Domain Stadium.

Mr Evans said the AFL had written to the Giants earlier this week, under the AFL Player Rules, after a report was submitted by the match-day umpires.

The AFL’s view is that the umpires should not be approached at any time by any club official during the course of the game but took into account the fact that Mr Cameron had proactively contacted the AFL Umpiring Department to apologise for his actions, before the AFL had sought to follow up the matter, as well as the fact this was his first offence under the rules.

As such, it had been determined the $2500 sanction would be suspended and only activated in the event of any further breach of the Rules.
