Academy prospect Ben Keays produced a tantalising 30-disposal and two-goal display, while veteran Brent Staker also booted a couple of majors from 25 disposals.

Carlton

Former Bulldog Jason Tutt had 23 touches, livewire forward Troy Menzel collected 18 disposals and Blaine Johnson booted four first-half goals in an otherwise tough day.

Patrick Karnezis (28 touches) and Ben Kennedy (27, 12 clearances) were prolific and both booted two majors, while youngster Matt Scharenberg (21) held nine marks after dropping back to VFL level.

This weekend: Frankston v Essendon - Sunday August 16, 2pm, Frankston Oval

Ruckman Shaun McKernan (one goal) strengthened his chances of replacing Jonathan Giles following a good performance in the Bombers' thumping 113-point win.

With Giles in doubt to face Gold Coast after injuring his ankle against Adelaide on Saturday, McKernan's loads were carefully managed and he took part in about three quarters.

Axed midfielder Nick O'Brien amassed 37 touches and nine clearances in an impressive hit-out, taking advantage of McKernan's ruck dominance.

Menzel, who has not played AFL since the 2011 qualifying final, provided a silver lining on a disappointing day for his side, finishing with three goals, 22 disposals and 10 clearances against the League leaders.

Billie Smedts regained some form with 26 disposals, while ex-basketball star Michael Luxford had 25 on a forgettable day for the Cats.

Anderson had 19 kicks and laid seven tackles, while Jonathan Simpkin did what he has done all season by racking up 26 touches.

Last year's finals hero Will Langford got through his first game since a medial issue as Box Hill held onto top spot on the VFL ladder while running half-back Angus Litherland ensured he won't be far from returning at senior level if a spot opens up.

Hawks rookie Sam Grimley slotted a season-high six majors.

Melbourne

State league affiliate: Casey Scorpions (VFL)
This weekend: Casey Scorpions v Williamstown - Saturday August 15, 2pm, Casey Fields

A sensational long running goal from Jack Fitzpatrick was the talking point from a hard-fought 17-point loss for Casey.

After jump-starting the Scorpions with three first-quarter goals, Fitzpatrick produced one for the highlights reel when he went on an unforgettable run in the second term.

Unfortunately, that was end of Fitzpatrick's goal-scoring heroics as the 200cm big man couldn't hit the scoreboard again.

Rookie-listed Mitchell White was best afield for the Scorpions, while young gun Billy Stretch booted a goal and had 16 touches at three-quarter time.

Guess who?! Fitzpatrick runs 70 metres, takes 8 bounces, and kicks his 4th! #GetSomeoneOnHim #StingEm @VFL #PJVFL

The silky 30-year-old dominated in the third term with 11 touches, showcasing his speed and poise through the centre in an important step on the comeback trail.

However, Wells, who has not played AFL since round two and is lacking match fitness, couldn't put a timeframe on his senior return.

Meanwhile, Ryan Bastinac put his hand up for a recall with a 43-possession haul in the come-from-behind win, while Trent Dumont (35), Brad McKenzie (29) and Aaron Mullett (27) impressed.

Key forward Aaron Black booted 1.3 and took seven marks.

Experienced campaigner Chris Knights returned from a quad injury and had an instant impact with 28 disposals, while Matt Dea (27 touches) and Matt McDonough (three goals) were also among the Tigers' best.
