FREMANTLE star Nat Fyfe's Brownlow Medal hopes hang by a thread after he was reported for a high hit on North Melbourne's Ben Jacobs on Sunday.

Fyfe and Jacobs both charged at a ground ball but the Freo star appeared to collect Jacobs in the head with his elbow.

The North midfielder reeled backwards in pain as his teammates ran in to remonstrate with Fyfe, who was reported.

Fyfe has already been fined twice by the Match Review Panel this season, meaning any guilty finding will result in an automatic suspension and ineligibility for the Brownlow Medal.

He was fined $1000 for tripping Bulldog Koby Stevens in round seven, and fined $1500 for a second low-level offence after he was found guilty of rough conduct for hitting Hawthorn's Taylor Duryea in the face with his forearm in round 15.

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon said post-match he thought Fyfe had gone in low for a ground ball as he was coached to do.

"If you attack the ball you are OK, so hopefully on the vision Nathan [Fyfe] has attacked the ball and gone low for the ball … if he has done that he should be OK, but if he has tucked in and bumped I think he is in trouble," Lyon said.

When Fyfe slid in, his elbow made contact with Jacobs' head as the North Melbourne midfielder reached in to grab the ball off the ground after it bounced away from him.

Although the Dockers midfielder appeared to have his eyes on the ball when he attacked the contest, the MRP does take into account a player's duty of care to their opponent and the potential to cause serious injury.

Jacobs received a free kick for the contact but continued playing.

North Melbourne coach Brad Scott declined to comment on the specific incident, but said he thought it had to be severe for a player to miss a game.

He backed the way Fyfe played the game.

"He's not a malicious player. He is a ball player. Everyone knows that," Scott said.

CrownBet has Fyfe a $1.65 favourite for the Brownlow, followed by Goldstein and West Coast's Matt Priddis (both $6.50).

AFL.com.au's Brownlow Medal predictor has Fyfe with 30 votes after 20 rounds, 10 votes clear of his nearest rival, Hawthorn midfielder Sam Mitchell.

North Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein is one vote further back on 19 votes.
