HAWTHORN CEO Stuart Fox has ruled out a last-minute swoop on Patrick Dangerfield, declaring the Hawks are unlikely to be major players in this year's trade or free agency markets.

Despite Dangerfield's family living in Moggs Creek near Geelong and his manager being in discussions with the Cats, rumours have swirled that the Adelaide free agent could be targeted by the Hawks.

However, Fox said that talk was off the mark.

"I'm not sure how that's going to happen. I've got no knowledge of him coming to our club," Fox told SEN.

"He's not coming to Hawthorn."

Troubled Gold Coast onballer Harley Bennell and Essendon's wantaway tall Jake Carlisle have also been linked to the back-to-back premiers this season.

The Hawks will need to find replacements for midfield leaders Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge in coming seasons, while another key defender to take over from ageing full-back Brian Lake is a priority.

But Fox said he wasn't "aware of" contact being made to sound out either Bennell or Carlisle.

"We've got capacity issues with our cap. I think we'll be quite quiet this year," Fox said.

"We've looked after our list and we think we've got a talented list. We might become more active in future years as obviously some retirements come up."

Lake and veteran ruckman David Hale are yet to re-sign for next season, with their futures set to be decided in the days immediately after Saturday's Grand Final against West Coast.

Matt Suckling, Ryan Schoenmakers and Brendan Whitecross' contracts are also set to expire this year.

"Regardless of the result, the decisions have to be made soon. So that all starts next week, win or lose. Our footy department are in a day later starting to make list decisions," Fox said.

Some Hawthorn fans breathed a sigh of relief when it was announced the club would wear its traditional brown and gold strip in the Grand Final as the Hawks search for an historic premiership three-peat.

However, Fox confirmed the shiny 'Power Ranger' guernsey introduced this season will still be Hawthorn's alternate strip in 2016.

"You get them approved for two years straight and we're wearing it again next year," Fox said.

"We only have to wear it a couple of times a year."
