CARLTON skipper Marc Murphy has suffered a hiccup with his pre-season program after undergoing a minor operation last week on the shoulder he had reconstructed in September.

Murphy experienced some discomfort with his left shoulder at training and he has remained in Melbourne to recover while his teammates have travelled to the Gold Coast for their pre-season training camp.

Daisy on track to recover from injury woes

The Blues are awaiting further test results before issuing a prognosis for the 28-year-old, who is set to link up with his teammates at their Queensland camp later this week.

Carlton coach Brendon Bolton confirmed on Tuesday that the injury was to the same shoulder that Murphy dislocated in round 21 against Melbourne, with the Blues hopeful no major damage would be revealed.

"He's just had a little bit of a setback with his shoulder. He obviously had the operation earlier in the year, so he's gone in and we'll know the result of that in the next few weeks," Bolton said from the Gold Coast.

"At this stage, we're hoping (it's) just a bit of a setback, but that's the nature of footy isn't it?

Bolton said Murphy's latest setback had not been the result of a training incident, with the Blues skipper yet to resume any contact work.

"He's just had some complications with the range of movement (of his shoulder)," Bolton said.

Entering his 11th season at Carlton since he was taken with pick No.1 in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft, Murphy said recently he hoped to remain captain following a review of the team's leadership structure by new coach Brendon Bolton.

The star midfielder has led the club since he took the captaincy reins from Chris Judd in 2013.
