SYDNEY Swans recruit Callum Sinclair is eyeing off the No.1 ruck role at his new club, but he understands there will be no shortage of suitors looking to fill the void left by the retired Mike Pyke.

The former Eagle landed at the Swans in this year's trade period as a straight swap for Lewis Jetta, despite being selected as part of West Coast's Grand Final team.

Now getting settled in his new surrounds, Sinclair is out to make an immediate impact at the Swans.

"That would be ideal if I could come in and play that (No.1) role but there are no guarantees," Sinclair told the club's website.

"You need to be playing consistent footy to be given the opportunity and privilege to put on a red and white jumper.

"Hopefully it falls that way… I haven't put too many expectations on myself for 2016. I've just been trying to focus on the pre-season and trying to get the best out of myself and the rest of the group.

"That's my focus for the time being and I'll reassess in the new year."

While Kurt Tippett looks to be the other standout ruck candidate, Sinclair will be fighting it out with Toby Nankervis, Tom Derickx and rookie Sam Naismith for a place in John Longmire's side.

Standing at 200cm, Sinclair's biggest strength is his versatility, as he has the ability to play as a genuine forward and not just a ruckman.

The 26-year-old says the mentorship of champion Eagle Dean Cox and star big man Nic Naitanui were vital in his development.

"To be under their tutelage for three years was a massive thrill for me," Sinclair said.

"I got a lot out of the experience and learned a great deal from them so I can't thank them enough for not only being mentors but good mates as well."

Sinclair played 29 games for the Eagles, including 20 last season, after being selected with pick No.12 in the 2013 Rookie Draft.
