GREATER Western Sydney could be in for a draft windfall if Collingwood's poor early season form continues.

The Giants received a future first-round pick from the Magpies in exchange for Adam Treloar during last year's trade period.

If the Magpies cannot improve their current ladder position of 15th, the pick they exchanged would hand the Giants pick No.4 in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft.

The Magpies have just one win after four rounds, with losses to the Sydney Swans, St Kilda and Melbourne.

The lower the Magpies finish, the more points the Giants would have to use on highly rated academy prospects such as Harrison Macreadie, who is their leading graduate at this stage of the season.

This selection would give the Giants 2034 points to use on Academy prospects, with every point vital as the club eyes off potential graduates such as Will Setterfield, Zach Sproule, Harry Perryman, Max Lynch, Todd Marshall, Kobe Mutch and Macreadie.

Collingwood is not the only team the Giants are closely watching, with another of their first round picks tied to Geelong, who sit fourth on the ladder but are performing close to expectation.

Because of the future picks they received, the Giants take three first-round picks into this season's exchange and draft period and two second-round picks.

All clubs are aware of the impact of future first-round picks with Gold Coast also well-placed with an extra first-round pick – tied to Melbourne - and three extra second-round picks (tied to Fremantle, Richmond and Port Adelaide).

The Suns also have a potential academy graduate Jack Bowes emerging through their program.

Although ladder positions obviously change, on current ladder positions the Giants’ first-round picks would be 4, 10 and 15 (4541 combined points) in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft and the Suns would have picks 9 and 14 (2630 combined points).

This year's draft will be the first year when future picks will have an impact with Collingwood, Geelong and Melbourne to enter this year's exchange and draft period without a first-round pick.

Clubs can trade one year in the future only and must make at least two first-round selections in each four-year period.
