THE POTENTIAL of sustained team success was the key factor in Lachie Whitfield re-committing to Greater Western Sydney.

Set to come out of contract at the end of the season, Whitfield joined a star-studded recent list of Giants players – which includes co-captains Callan Ward and Phil Davis, Jeremy Cameron, Stephen Coniglio, Dylan Shiel and Devon Smith - to give potential suitors a 'don't argue', signing a new two-year deal with the club.

Whitfield has played 58 games since being taken as the No.1 pick in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft, and would have attracted a host of offers to return to his home state had he not put pen to paper this week.

The 21-year-old Victorian felt the pain of the club's early days with four of the 19 games in his debut season resulting in three-figure defeats, but Whitfield said on Friday that he never really considered leaving, especially given the spike in the team's on-field fortunes over the past two seasons.

"If I was to leave and see success (happening) up here it would really burn me I think," Whitfield said.

"We started from the bottom, losing a lot of games and having some really tough times, so now to see some improvement in the team, I really want to be part of that.

"As soon as I got to the club I saw myself trying to be here for as long as I can, I love Sydney and I'm really excited to be staying for another two years.

"It was pretty simple in the end.

"Obviously I've got family (there) and that’s where I came from, so there's always that temptation to maybe head back.

"Things did get mentioned (in the media) but I was really keen to stay up here and this is where I want to continue my footy."

Whitfield has made his name as a skillful wingman so far, but has made no secret of the fact that his wants more time in the middle of the ground this year to help his all-round game.

Finding a spot in that part of the ground in an in-form side containing names like Ward, Shiel, Coniglio and Ryan Griffen however is a different story.

"I jump at every opportunity I can get, but I don't get given too many," he laughed.

"I try and grab them with both hands when I'm in there.

"I've chucked on a few kilos this pre-season and my contested ball game has gone up pretty significantly this year.

"I'm still more of an outside player but I'm trying to get the balance between both, working with the midfield coaches and strength and conditioning staff.

"I like that area of the game."

Whitfield's commitment provides another boost for the Giants off the field, and general manager football Wayne Campbell said the wingman is the ideal type of person for the club to build around.

"Like most of our playing list, they've started as young boys and grown into really good men, and good people," he said.

"Lachie is certainly one of those and we want him to be a one-club player at the Giants with lost of success under his belt.

"He's upholding his end of the bargain, and we've got to make sure we do the same thing."
