STAR Sydney Swans ruckman Kurt Tippett says his recovery from hamstring surgery is on track to see him return before finals.

Tippett, 29, partially tore the hamstring tendon in his left leg during the round 12 clash against Greater Western Sydney. He has been moved on to the long-term injury list.

He told sydneyswans.com.au he would begin light running soon.

"The physios and the doctors will guide me. Hopefully jogging again soon, back on my legs. That would be a good result," Tippett said.

"Running fast is a bit of a different story. We'll have to build up a bit slowly.

"I think it was originally talked about as an eight-week injury, so fingers crossed."

The injury struck after an excellent start to the season, where he averaged more than a goal per game and was ranked 10th in hit-outs per match.

"The surgery went well and the leg's feeling pretty good. I'm two weeks post-surgery now and I'm just starting rehab," he said.

"(I've) got a bit of work ahead of me but looking forward to getting back soon."

The unusual nature of the injury left Tippett bemused.

"Bit of a funny one, to be honest. I just did it jumping. There was no contact or it wasn't even the leg I jumped off," he said.

"It was just a stretch and my hamstring didn't really like it."
