CYRIL Rioli's relief at escaping suspension for his bump on Clayton Oliver isn't causing the Hawthorn star to rethink his physicality.

Rioli copped a $1000 fine for rough conduct for his hip and shoulder on the Melbourne youngster two games ago.

The heavy collision didn't impact Oliver's head, although Rioli breathed easier once the Match Review Panel's findings were handed down and he avoided suspension.

"Yeah, I was (relieved) actually, cost me a bit of money but …" he said.

"I just went at the body, I didn't think too much about it and after the game I spoke to some of the guys about if I'd get looked at.

"But I wasn't too worried about it."

Rioli's physicality has helped inspire his teammates this season and he isn't going to pull back from playing "close to the line", which coach Alastair Clarkson demands from his players.

"I think sometimes those things can definitely spark up your team and we weren't going so well," Rioli said.

After the best season of his brilliant career last year, Rioli is on the verge of breaking his record goal tally when the Hawks take on West Coast in Perth on Friday night.

The electric small forward has booted 40.10, one goal shy of last year's haul, despite missing three matches.

"I feel last year was probably my best year and this year I've hit the scoreboard a lot more," Rioli said.

"(I'm focusing on) doing that real well, just trying to play my role, chase and tackle and pretty much do everything that I've been doing in the past."

The Norm Smith medallist has become even more deadly around goal, and is the Hawks' most accurate player this season (75.9 per cent).

But it's not due to more practice.

"I think it might be a few less shots (at training), because out there it's pretty windy," he said.

"Come game day I just try and narrow my focus and take my shots when I can.”
