GOLD Coast's Steven May and Tom Lynch would work well together as co-captains if current skipper Gary Ablett doesn't continue in the role in 2017, according to respected Suns veteran Jarrod Harbrow.

May and Lynch have shared duties since round 17 after Ablett was ruled out with a shoulder injury.

"They could probably share it and be co-captains. That would bring out the best in both of them," Harbrow told AFL.com.au.

"They both have great leadership qualities. They both perform consistently well, which is what you want from the leaders of your football club, and the boys have got a lot of respect for the way they go about it."

Harbrow has played 113 games with the Suns since being recruited to play for the club in its first season.

A member of the club's leadership group, he has been a consistent performer and is highly regarded within the club.

"That will be up to the coaches as to what they see fit going into next year but I would be all for them to either be joint captains or for one of them to take it," Harbrow said.

The 28-year-old said he thought Ablett would do what was best for the team and support whatever decision was made in the best interest of the club.

But he said that if the 32-year-old dual Brownlow medallist thought he was the best man for the job he would back that direction as well.

However Suns coach Rodney Eade told AFL.com.au on Thursday he was not necessarily convinced that a change in the captaincy was necessary.

He backed Ablett's approach and said it was too early to be flagging a change.

"It will be an interesting debate but at this stage I would not think there is any need to," Eade said.

Harbrow said the club had improved during Eade's time with more people accepting leadership responsibilities.

"[We] have to keep each other accountable," Harbrow said.

"In the past I don't think we have done that well enough but there is no real grey area anymore."
