GREATER Western Sydney has received a massive boost ahead of next week's historic preliminary final, with news that star midfielder Stephen Coniglio has signed a new contract with the club.

Coniglio, who signed a two-year extension during the middle of last year, has now committed to the Giants until the end of 2019.

The West Australian has had a breakout year after being elevated to the club's leadership group in the pre-season – he broke the Giants' record for disposals in the regular season, is ranked equal first for contested possessions, second for clearances and tackles, and third for score involvements.

He was considered unlucky to miss All Australian selection, and was one of the Giants' three nominees at Tuesday night's AFL Player's Association's MVP awards.

Seen as a future captain of the Giants, the second pick at the 2011 NAB AFL Draft was best afield in last week's qualifying final win over the Sydney Swans, and is in line to win his first club champion award in October.

Coniglio said homesickness has never been a factor for him and he had no hesitation in signing on when the club approached his management early.

"It was a no brainer, to do it now or next year, it didn't matter time-wise," Coniglio said on Wednesday.

"Having been at the Giants since the start and seeing where we are headed, I had no hesitation in re-signing," he said.

"I enjoy living in Sydney and playing football with a committed and hard working group of footballers, who are also my some of my closest friends.

"Together we've worked hard and battled through some tough times over the past five years and I want to be part of the success that is hopefully ahead of us."

The 22-year-old joins a star-studded list of Giants to re-sign this year, with co-captain Callan Ward, Nick Haynes, Tom Scully, Shane Mumford and Lachie Whitfield all inking new deals.

Coniglio said he has no doubt that the attitude and hunger among the playing group could bring them premierships in the future, and that had driven him, and a lot of his teammates to commit their footy lives to GWS.

"We definitely have the list to do it and the people behind the scenes," he said.

"There's obviously a lot of clubs out there that have the same goal in mind, but deep down, I know we have the group to do it … whether it's this year or next year, or the year after.

"Growing up it's been a dream of ours to play in grand finals and win them.

"We've recruited a number of players who have had that success and told us what that actually feels like, so for us it's our main driving factor, and one that we're working towards."

GWS general manager of football Wayne Campbell said he was thrilled to have the emerging leader on board.

"Stephen came to the Giants as a 17-year-old with a lot of raw talent, but through a great deal of hard work he has developed into one of the club's leading midfielders," Campbell said.

"At 22 he already has a great deal of AFL experience, and has become a great leader for this club both on and off the field.

"He's a highly valued member of the playing group and it's exciting to know he'll be part of the club's future."
