ALTHOUGH they didn’t set the Fantasy world on fire in 2016, Port Adelaide certainly created a lot of talk.

Firstly, we saw the rise of Ollie Wines (MID, $607,000), who played every game and became the only Port player to average triple figures for the year.

Robbie Gray (MID, $590,000) averaged 98 to be one of the best forwards, but Gray has now lost his forward status and can only be selected in the midfield. This will deter many coaches, but with new player positions being released throughout the season, he is every chance to regain what he has lost.

Darcy Byrne-Jones (DEF, $355,000) and Jackson Trengove (RUC, $417,000) proved themselves to be worthy cash cows but after a sizzling pre-season, Sam Gray (MID, 526,000) disappointed many and didn’t step up when it really mattered.

So with a new season just around the corner, what can Port Adelaide offer Fantasy coaches in the new year?

With so many Fantasy forwards being stripped of their dual-position status, we need to look for value and Chad Wingard (FWD, $432,000) is certainly that.

Wingard averaged just 72 this season, 18 points less than what he achieved in 2015. In fact, 2016 was his worst Fantasy season since he debuted in 2012.

If Wingard can regain the form that we have seen in the past, he might just be one of the best unique options to start with.

For some strange reason, Brad Ebert (MID, $510,000) dropped his average under 99 for the first time in four seasons. He managed to average 84, which means he’ll be a huge sleeper in many drafts.

If he’s getting the midfield time he deserves over the pre-season, then move him up your ranking order and select him as someone who is capable of averaging much more than his price.

Does Hamish Hartlett (DEF/MID, $474,000) interest you as a defender?

The price alone should be enough to tempt you. After a disappointing season, Hartlett averaged just 79. However, when you compare that to the 97 he averaged the year before as a midfielder, you can now see why his name has been an early talking point.

Sam Powell-Pepper (MID, $216,000) is a big-bodied midfielder who will play next year. He does come with a slighter higher price tag than other rookies, but this kid will actually play.

Powell-Pepper is an aggressive midfielder from Western Australia who has been likened to Dustin Martin and Luke Parker.

At his price, he is too dear to have on your bench. However, he could hold down the last midfield position on the ground.

Brett Eddy (FWD, $150,000) is another name to keep an eye on over the pre-season. Eddy has led the goal kicking in the SANFL for the last two years, and at the age of 27, he could become the replacement for the recently retired Jay Schulz.

This mature-aged rookie surely hasn’t been selected just to make up the numbers and should be promoted at some point.

Due to all banned the Bombers receiving a 10 per cent discount on their 2015 average, Patrick Ryder (RUC/FWD, $411,000) is nice and cheap for a dual-position player.

In his first season with the Power, Ryder averaged 76 and even that was a long way down from what he was producing at Essendon.

Ryder is capable of averaging 85 and therefore he's a bargain next year.

If Roy was writing this part, we’d be here all day. Luckily, you’re stuck with me and therefore I’ll reluctantly say … avoid Charlie Dixon (FWD, $340,000).

He hasn’t averaged over 60 in the last two years and being a key forward certainly doesn’t help his Fantasy game.

Last year he was hampered by a troublesome ankle, and key forwards like Dixon need to bag five to six goals if they want a respectable score.

Dixon is cheap, but cheap for a reason. So don’t even think about it.
