THE AFL won't re-negotiate the collective bargaining agreement and broadcast rights deal for the NAB AFL Women's competition before they expire after the 2018 season, CEO Gillon McLachlan says.

McLachlan also confirmed the League's commitment to make this year's AFLW Grand Final free of charge, while he nominated Adelaide Oval, if the Crows earn the right to host the game, and Carlton's Ikon Park home as two potential venues for the decider.

"We think we would probably ticket it, but the tickets would be free, so that we don't have the same (lockout) issues," McLachlan said on SEN.

The League signed off on a two-year women's pay deal last November, with the minimum wage jumping from $5000 to $8500 following months of discussions.

The AFL also struck a two-year broadcast agreement with Foxtel and Channel Seven for the AFLW competition.

Given the fledgling nature of the inaugural competition, Foxtel and Seven did not pay for broadcast rights to the games.

"They (Seven and Foxtel) have shown great faith and great partnership," McLachlan said

"I will not be looking to renegotiate that because that's the deal that we did and their partnership has been important."

McLachlan said the re-negotiation of both deals would go hand in hand, but there was no need to rush, particularly with the possible expansion of the competition in coming years.

"Everything's locked in for two years. Everyone has invested in this concept of building something for the women now and the women of the generations (to come) so they can be full-time professional footballers," he said.

"But you have to build it (first).

McLachlan said one of the key positives to emerge from the AFLW's early success was the new audience attending games, particularly women and families.

In a wide-ranging hour-long interview, the AFL CEO also touched on a range of topics including:

  • The CBA for the men's competition: "We're committed to having a fair deal for the players and if you go in (to negotiations) with that mindset, it'll happen," McLachlan said.
  • A possible twilight Grand Final: "Technically, yes (it could happen this year). At some stage it will happen. I reckon it will happen in this broadcast rights deal."
  • On retaining the bounce: "You've got to weigh up how important tradition is, as opposed to the upside of progression and change."
  • The 17-5 fixture model: "We're looking at it. There's a lot of upside, but we've got to work out what the bottom six will be playing for."
