VICTORIA'S Transport Accident Commission has ended its partnership with Geelong after skipper Joel Selwood lost his driver's licence for speeding.

Selwood was clocked doing 127km/h in a 100km/h zone in February and subsequently lost his licence for a month.

It's believed the club and TAC had been in negotiations to renew their $250,000 a year relationship before the latest incident.

The TAC said a 2015 agreement with Geelong meant "any further serious incidents" would lead to the partnership being relinquished.

Selwood's indiscretion is the fourth road-related incident the Cats have faced in recent years.

In 2013 Billie Smedts, who's now at Carlton, posed for a selfie from behind the wheel and in 2014 ruckman Dawson Simpson, who's now at GWS, was caught drink-driving, while former Cat Brad Hartman was charged with leaving the scene of an accident after clipping a parked car when he failed to stop at a stop sign.

"For the past 11 years, the Cats have been a great supporter of road safety," the TAC and Geelong said in a joint statement.

"In January 2015 the GFC stated publicly that in the event of any further serious incidents the partnership would be relinquished, and the TAC respects the club's integrity.

"Both the TAC and the Cats will continue to explore opportunities to work in the community to reduce road trauma going forward."

Cats CEO Brian Cook told SEN the decision to end the relationship was mutual with the TAC understandably frustrated at seven incidents in 10 years emanating from Geelong.

"It's difficult to manage a contract like this," Cook said.

"We have done our best and in the end it hasn't worked."

Selwood acknowledged his mistake publicly soon after the incident and has expressed his remorse.

AFL.com.au understands the Cats are yet to consider what action, if any, Selwood will face from the club as a result of the transgression but they will do so through their internal processes in due course.

As AFL.com.au revealed last Monday, Selwood's actions had prompted the TAC to launch a review of its relationship with the AFL club.

The TAC will continue to sponsor the AFL's flagship Victorian under-18 competition, the TAC Cup.
