DON'T expect to see Sydney star Kurt Tippett kicking the dew off the SCG in the NEAFL on Sunday, despite the fact that he was named in the club's initial squad.

Tippett was a shock selection in a forward pocket when the extended squads were released for Sunday's curtain raiser against the Brisbane Lions on Friday morning.

The big man was a late withdrawal from the Swans' senior side that suffered a shock loss to Carlton last week, after he hurt his hip flexor during a closed training session two days before the match.

He failed to join the Swans for Wednesday's main training session, which meant he couldn't be recalled to the senior squad named on Thursday night, but Tippett did take to the track on Friday.

Swans general manager of football Tom Harley told AFL.com.au that the ruckman wasn't considered for the senior team given his lack of training, but he had to be named in the NEAFL squad as precaution, in case Sam Naismith (knee) couldn't prove his fitness.

Naismith will face the Lions after getting through Friday's closed session, and Harley said that Tippett would train on Saturday in a bid to win a recall for next Sunday's game against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

Tippett has struggled for form since returning from serious a hamstring injury late last year, and has had issues with his body again this season.

The Swans big man played the first two games of the year before rolling his ankle against the Western Bulldogs, then returned to face the Giants in round five, where he gathered just five touches, and none after half-time, in Sydney's 42-point loss.
