DEFENDER Patrick Ambrose has signed a new two-year deal to remain at Essendon.

Sidelined with a quad injury, Ambrose hasn't played at senior level since round five.

The 25-year-old's new contract is a sign of commitment that goes both ways.

"There's no doubt Paddy is an important part of our defensive group, and we can't wait to see him back in the mix for selection once he's fully recovered from his quad injury," coach John Worsfold told essendonfc.com.au.

"That shouldn't be too far away, which is really pleasing for us.

"Paddy's highly respected by his teammates, and his seamless transition into the backline is great reward for his hard work.

"He is an exceptional athlete and I know he’s really driven to become a more attacking defender over the coming seasons."

Having cemented his position in the Bombers' defensive unit after starting his career as a forward, Ambrose expects to remain in the back half.

"Playing down back really suits my game, I enjoy the challenge of going head to head with my opponent and now I'm trying to develop into an attacking defender," Ambrose said.

Initially recruited to the Bombers VFL team, Ambrose was selected with pick 26 in the 2014 NAB AFL Rookie Draft, making his debut in round one just a few months later.

He's played 55 senior games.
