JAKE Stringer has hit the training track at Essendon's Tullamarine base after cutting his US holiday short.

The 23-year-old former Bulldog arrived at Essendon on Friday morning to get a jump start on his pre-season after his controversial departure from Whitten Oval.

Stringer left Los Angeles 10 days ahead of schedule, partly for family reasons but also to begin settling in at his new home.

"There's a little bit of family reasons, but also just to get a good jump on pre-season, just to make sure on day one of pre-season I'm ready to go," Stringer told the Essendon website.

"Just making sure that I could spend enough time to get myself ready to go start of pre-season, so if that meant cutting the trip a little bit short then that's what we had to do."

Stringer spoke briefly about the emotional rollercoaster of the post-season.

"Especially after the last month or two have been pretty rough on myself and my family and my kids, so it's just making sure that I put my best foot forward and that means coming in early and starting to earn the respect and the trust of all of the boys and all the community and all the Bombers supporters," he said.

The forward, who the Bombers expect will also spend some time in the midfield in 2018, pointed to the club's recovery from the supplements scandal as an attraction in joining the club.

"I think where they've come from after the whole saga, and how they've really grown over the last year or two, I think that's massive and it sort of ties in really well with me," he said.
