ANDREW Mackie will use 15 years of AFL experience to help assemble Geelong's future list when he joins the club's recruiting team in 2018.

AFL.com.au understands the 33-year-old will take on a role in recruiting and talent identification with the Cats, after his recent retirement from the game.

Mackie isn't expected to start in the role, which is yet to be finalised in its entirety, until the new year.

He will join the team that includes long-time recruiting and list manager Stephen Wells, talent identification manager Troy Selwood and assistant Liam Woodland.

The Cats outlined a plan to expand their recruiting department ahead of this season, which prompted the appointment of Selwood and Woodland to full-time positions.

They also have one part-timer and six weekend scouts across the country in their team.

Mackie played 280 games between 2004 and 2017 for Geelong, after being drafted at pick No.7 overall in 2002.

He announced his retirement in low-key fashion alongside fellow defender Tom Lonergan after the Cats' final-round clash with Greater Western Sydney at Simonds Stadium in August.
