ESSENDON premiership defender Sean Wellman has been voted onto the club's board.

The former assistant coach and 2000 flag member's bid to join the Bombers' hierarchy has been successful, as announced by chairman Lindsay Tanner on Tuesday.

Wellman retired in 2004 after 212 games at AFL level, including 34 for Adelaide, before moving into coaching, including a stint at the Bombers.

He quit to focus on his personal business, but stayed involved with football, including last year when he was appointed as the personal coach for the Bombers' group of banned players.

"Sean will bring significant football and financial experience to the board," Tanner said.

"Sean achieved the ultimate success as a player and was an assistant coach with the club, and he will provide valuable contemporary football knowledge to the board. More recently he has run a successful finance and hospitality business."

Director Katie Lio has been re-elected as the other candidate alongside Wellman to win the most votes, but board member Paul Cousins has lost his place on the board after a three-year term.

Essendon will hold its annual general meeting next Monday.
