ATHLETIC North Melbourne draftee Kyron Hayden has undergone right shoulder surgery for a long-term problem and will miss up to five months.

As AFL.com.au reported last week, Hayden – the Roos' third pick and No.62 selection overall in this year's NAB AFL Draft – was still experiencing discomfort with an injury he arrived at Arden Street with.

The 18-year-old defied the injury to break the Draft Combine record in the running vertical leap with a 103cm effort.

Hayden continued to train last week in a limited-contact vest, but sat out of match simulation on Friday as North considered what to do with him after extensive testing.

The Subiaco product had shoulder surgery to repair his AC joint on Monday.

The Kangaroos' football boss Cameron Joyce said the club was aware of Hayden's shoulder problem before drafting him.

"It's an injury he's been managing for quite a while. We sought two opinions and both specialists advised the best course of action for Kyron was surgery," Joyce said.

"At this stage he's looking at between four to five months on the sidelines, which has him coming back in late March or early April, just after the start of the season."

Joyce said he was confident Hayden's strong physical stature would aid in the rehabilitation process.

"Kyron has spent a lot of time in the gym over the past few years and has an AFL-ready body, which he will be able to use to his advantage," Joyce said.

"At that age, many players don't have the level of muscle development Kyron has, and an injury like this can be a much bigger setback.

"But for Kyron, we see him coming back very quickly from this and believe he has an extremely bright future at North."
