THE MOOD at Hawthorn after prevailing in a thrilling Easter Monday clash against Geelong will be soured after vision emerged of young gun James Sicily appearing to knee Cats captain Joel Selwood in the head.

The football had left the immediate vicinity of the pair but the two continued remonstrating and when Selwood grabbed Sicily's legs, the fiery Hawk appeared to repeatedly drop his left knee into the champion onballer's head.

Selwood kept playing without any concern but the confrontation is sure to come under the scrutiny of Match Review Officer Michael Christian on Tuesday.

Both engaged in a lengthy conversation after the siren as they shook hands, with Selwood initiating the conversation and Sicily seeming aggrieved.

'It's not about me': Hawk's lesson learned

The footage emerged on Channel Seven and Selwood was reticent to say too much.

"Those games, they bring out huge emotions. I obviously wasn't happy at the time with the incident, but it is what it is," Selwood told 7mate.

The six-time All Australian said he didn't remember too much of the tussle.

"Not too much (of a recollection), until I saw it out the back in the green room. I didn't look like I was too happy with it," Selwood said.

"He probably picked the wrong bloke to do it to too, because I don't react too well to a lot of things like that.

"It happened quick to be honest. I'm fine tonight. I'm not, hopefully, going to say anything silly. It's just one of those footy incidents."

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson admitted to AFL.com.au earlier this year that Sicily needed to work on keeping his anger under control .

"With Sicily, there is no point trying to sweep things under the carpet," Clarkson said.

"He has some things in his temperament and with being able to push aside the emotions of the game and we still see evidence in stages of games when he just loses it.

"But if he can manage that temperament, and that's our biggest challenge as coaches, if we can steer him through that, he’s got leadership written all over him. He has star quality written all over him, but he is impulsive and he has a temper. As does his coach, so I have empathy with him."
