FAST-EMERGING Western Bulldogs midfielder Toby McLean has signed a three-year contract extension to remain at the Kennel through the 2022 season.

The Bulldogs approached the 22-year-old, in his fourth season at the club and already contracted for 2019, about re-committing for a longer period.

McLean has taken his game to another level in 2018, averaging almost 25 disposals, six tackles and six score involvements, to go with 4.4 clearances per game.

He is second at the Dogs in tackles, third for disposals and clearances and fourth for inside 50s and contested possessions in an illustration of his importance.

"I was really excited when they came to me and said they wanted to sign me. For it to be another four years – I'm stoked," McLean said.

"The club has really looked after me. The people around the place is what really drives you to be the player and the person that you are."

McLean is a product of the Oakleigh Chargers and Narre Warren and was the Bulldogs' first selection and No.26 overall in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.

They also netted Lukas Webb (27), Bailey Dale (45), Caleb Daniel (46) and Zaine Cordy (62) on the same night.

McLean, Daniel and Cordy played in the Dogs' drought-busting premiership two years ago.

"It's fantastic for Toby and the club that we were able to secure him for an extra three years," Bulldogs' general manager of list and recruiting Sam Power said.

"The improvement we’ve seen in Toby's game has been great to watch.

"He has established himself as a tough and courageous inside midfielder with an ability to impact in the forward half.

"Pleasingly for us, his best years are well and truly ahead of him, and we look forward to seeing him continue to improve his game."
