FOUR-TIME premiership player Jordan Lewis has advised his Melbourne teammates to go on a booze ban in order to chase the ultimate success.

The fifth-placed Demons are well in the hunt for their first finals campaign since 2006 after beating Adelaide by 13 points at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

Star Demons onballer Clayton Oliver – who was outstanding in the victory with a team-high 31 disposals, including 25 contested possessions – told AFL.com.au he was staying away from alcohol to help give his side the best possible chance of going deep into the finals.

"I won't be drinking until the end of the season, just want to make sure if we're there in September that I'll be fresh and ready to go," Oliver said.

"It's about sacrificing a little bit now, and hopefully the rewards come later.

"It's a team thing. 'Lewy' said it the other week and they're pretty wise words.

"It's not that you have to (stay off alcohol), but it was a recommendation."

THIRD-QUARTER BLITZ Five talking points from Crows v Demons

Lewis, 32, is highly respected among the Demons since joining the club at the start of last season.

He was an influential part of Hawthorn's reign of dominance, playing 264 games for the Hawks and winning four premierships.

"I think he might have mentioned (that the Hawks went on a booze ban)," Oliver said.

"They did it a couple of times and they were pretty successful, so I don't see why not.

"When he says something, you do it. If he says don't do it, you don't do it.

"It's pretty simple."

Lewis was chaired off the ground for his 300th game after the win over the Crows.

He finished with 21 disposals across half-back, and kicked two near-identical goals from just outside the 50m arc.

Oliver will go close to collecting another three Brownlow Medal votes after another superb midfield performance.

He was in doubt leading into the game after feeling some tightness in his quad at training on Wednesday.

The Demons were extra cautious, having had defender Michael Hibberd injure his quad recently.

"It's all good. I think it's a little bit of over-reaction, given a few boys had done their quads in previous weeks," Oliver said.

"The fitness staff jumped on it pretty quickly, which is probably natural so no one else gets injured.

"I got the scan back at about 2.50pm on the Wednesday and it was all clear, just a bit of tightness."
