Essendon has made two late changes for its do-or-die MCG showdown with Hawthorn on Saturday.

Matt Dea will miss despite passing concussion protocols after landing awkwardly from a marking contest last week. Matt Guelfi (illness) is also out.

Ben McNiece and Travis Colyer are their replacements.

The seventh-placed Hawks are as selected.

Hawthorn is a game and significant percentage ahead of the Bombers, who won eight of their last 10 matches to revive their finals hopes.

Alastair Clarkson's side has claimed three victories from four starts and overran Essendon by 23 points in round seven.

Hawthorn's six-goal-to-one-behind third term was the difference that day.

The Hawks promoted up-and-comer Harry Morrison at Jono O'Rourke's expense, while the Bombers backed in the side which downed Sydney last week

Hawthorn has triumphed in five of its seven trips to the MCG in 2018, but Essendon has just a 1-5 record at the home of Australian football.
