PORT Adelaide is attempting to lure 2004 premiership star Jarrad Schofield back to Alberton.

Fresh from claiming his fourth consecutive WAFL minor premiership with Subiaco, Schofield is understood to be considering the opportunity to become an AFL assistant coach.

Regarded as one of the best head coaches in state leagues across the country, Schofield is being courted to fill one of two vacant positions at the Power.

Power senior assistant Matthew Nicks looks set to depart for Greater Western Sydney and head of development Aaron Greaves has been linked to a move to North Melbourne.

Currently in his sixth year at Subiaco, Schofield will fall out of contract at season's end and any move to an AFL club would come with the WAFL club's blessing.

Schofield, who played 204 AFL games with West Coast, Port Adelaide and Fremantle, was invited into the inner sanctum alongside Ken Hinkley in the build-up to the Showdown in May.

In town to watch the WAFL state match against the SANFL, Schofield spent time at Alberton with son Taj, a father-son prospect for 2020.

The younger Schofield was this year named an under-16 All Australian and has spent time training with the Power, including shadowing midfield bull Ollie Wines.

The 15-year-old is one of several Power father-son hopefuls in coming years that includes Peter Burgoyne's three sons.

Schofield has previously been approached by the Power and Adelaide to return to South Australia before opting to remain at Subiaco on rolling two-year extensions.

Under his tenure, Subiaco won back-to-back flags in 2014 and 2015 and was runner-up to Peel Thunder sides stacked with Fremantle-listed players in 2016 and 2017.

Schofield's side remains undefeated ahead of this weekend's final home and away match against Perth.

Under Schofield's regime, mature-age players such as Sam Menegola (Geelong), Liam Ryan (West Coast), Liam Baker (Richmond) and the late Shane Yarran (Fremantle) have been drafted to AFL lists.

A number of Schofield’s 2004 premiership teammates have gone on to land jobs at AFL clubs.

Damien Hardwick and Stuart Dew are now senior coaches, while Brendon Lade, Chad Cornes and Adam Kingsley are current assistants with Brett Montgomery, Josh Carr and Dean Brogan having held positions in previous seasons.
