MELBOURNE midfielders Jack Viney and Dom Tyson have moved a step closer to locking in their selection for Friday night’s elimination final against Geelong after getting through a physically taxing training session on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Jordan Lewis was back at training after he missed Saturday's session through illness.

Viney and Tyson both joined in full contact drills during the 90-minute session, putting their bodies to the full test during 20 minutes of intense match simulation.

The session was particularly important for Tyson as it was the first time he had joined main training since fracturing the ulna bone in his arm against Greater Western Sydney in round 23.

Viney, who has not played since round 16 after his troublesome foot flared again, was back in main training for the first time on Saturday and backed it up with another strong hit-out on Tuesday to all but confirm his return against the Cats.

Tyson was put through his paces at the end of training by the club's fitness staff and worked one-on-one with rehab coach Daniel Cross on tackling and breaking through tackles to test his arm out.

The midfielder, who wore a guard with tape wrapped around it to protect his left arm following surgery, appeared to get through that test fine, but Melbourne is sure to make the call on his availability later in the week.

Interestingly, none of the players who played in the VFL for Casey at the weekend – including Mitch Hannan and Joel Smith – participated in match simulation.

They instead completed extra fitness as part of their programs.

Hannan is a good chance to return to the team after being a late withdrawal from the round 23 match against the Giants with a sore knee, and could replace Dean Kent (AC joint) in the side.

Co-skipper Nathan Jones and midfielder Jay Kennedy Harris were among the standouts at training on Tuesday.
